James Robert Buttenshaw

Born on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, James studied Biology in Edinburgh and has lived in Hertfordshire and Cumbria.  James has travelled in Europe, walked extensively in Scotland and the Lake District (214/214), and has a love for quiet places. His favourite 'Wainwrights' are Hard Knott and Glaramara.

Versatile, empathetic, and relaxed, James has years of experience in a wide variety of photographic fields both in formal, and in documentary style, and prides himself on providing a professional and flexible service within any remit, establishing a gentle and comfortable rapport, and with an overall emphasis on quality.

There’s a penchant displayed in James’ work for capturing the feelings shared between people and the expressions they produce; it’s apparent that his work is cherished and has a personal touch.

LRPS

I compiled a series of images for the LRPS submission in 2022. The judging panel commented on the emotion and feeling behind my work before awarding the distinction, much to my elation.

I'm currently working towards the next standard, an 'Associate'.

British Photography Awards

Rounding a corner during a walk in Great Langdale, Cumbria, I found a flock of Herdwicks watching me intently. I was lucky enough to capture them in the shadow of Bow Fell, and was shortlisted in the BPA. I have a soft spot for these quintessential sheep, and always tip my hat to them.

A quiet little corner in Vogue

I was commissioned to shoot fashion at a studio, and on location in Greenwich Park in London, for a London designer. My work appeared in the main copy of 'Vogue Magazine'. Albeit as part of a paid advert, I'll still take that - I was on one it's hallowed pages!

“Thank you so much for the photos of our gorgeous baby boy on his first birthday, you captured him beautifully. We really like your relaxed and friendly approach, it felt more like having a friend over for tea than a photoshoot! “James came to do a photo shoot of our children at a campsite we stayed on with a bluebell field. Not only did he travel out of his way, but he managed to capture some beautiful shots of our children looking angelic. After seeing these photos, we booked a photo shoot for the whole family, and James took wonderful, natural photos, whilst the children were busy playing, and we also did a couple of posed shots of the whole family. I do highly recommend James as a photographer.”
